Pre-algebra
 WORKSHEETs

Most important, the math worksheets are designed to encourage verbal interaction between students, parent and educator.  Don’t just give an extra assignment and walk away!  Your student will either enter a rote learning trance state or do the work badly.  Instead, present the worksheets as safe places for interesting conversations about math. Work the problems together and talk them through.  You may also assign two students to work together as a cooperative learning team, and discuss the worksheet with both at once. The emphasis isn’t just on getting lots and lots of problems right, but on understanding what math is and how it works as a reasoning process.

Kids getting ahead
IN MATH!

The Homework Club was formed in 1997 as a nonprofit for kids who needed extra help with homework.  We found that math was the main focus on a daily basis.  With the help of all our teachers over many years we developed a system that worked very well for kids who struggle; The Milestone’s, Favorite Mistakes and our Math and Language Arts workbooks.  This set of procedures was extremely successful in our after school program for middle school students.
We believe that workbooks designed with our kids in mind were the perfect tool to help them get beyond their Favorite Mistakes and the associated anxiety that came with learning math.

MISTAKES

The beginning algebra math worksheets have been written to meet the needs of unskilled rote learners and help then make the transition to becoming resourceful learners. The pages are designed to minimize anxiety; few problems per page, large font, room for computation and clear examples. Each page contains helpful clues and suggestions, guiding the cognitive development in learning math.  The “cognitive clues” focus on the reasoning process and invites students to explain their ideas and procedures in their own words.
